Characters

Main characters

Shchel Kunchik

Our main character. He’s weak but extremely determined, and has dreamed of being a Mage since he was saved from a dragon by Clarinet, leader of the Magicorps – and so he went to Sforzando in hopes of learning magic along with Piroro, the Fairy. His name means Nutcracker in Russian.

Piroro

Shchel’s fairy companion, who claims to be his caretaker. She’s extremely overprotective of Shchel, and hates Great from the get-go, believing him to be a negative influence on her charge.

Great

An aloof young man, son of the Hero Hamel. After trying and failing to push Shchel’s friendship away, he’s grown just as protective of him as Piroro, with whom he’s constantly at odds. Has a dark sense of humor and a nasty teasing streak, but is not above playing the straight man when his friends are getting carried away by their hijinks.

Lute

Great’s older brother and an upperclassman at the School of Magic. He’s one of the best students in school, the Chairman to the Student Council and the Captain of the Kuu Crusaders, the cadet unity of the School of Magic – in other words, he’s the perfect student. Good-natured and soft-spoken, he’s very protective and supportive of his younger brother.

Classmates

Biyorne

The oldest of the String Sisters, beautiful and feared. It’s said any man who gets too close to them gets turned into mince-meat; however, Biyorne doesn’t use her strength unless it’s called upon, being a cheerful and savvy girl apart from monstrously skilled. She’s responsible for and very supportive of her younger sister.

Bratsche

The youngest String Sister, she’s shy and not entirely in control of her monstrous strength, sometimes breaking masonry and hurting classmates by accident. Personality wise, though, she’s very sweet and soft-spoken, and very respectful of her older sister. Her name means "viola" in German.

Tenor Sax

A swordsman from the Country of Swordsmanship, Dal Segno. Hates mazoku and anything that may be connected to them, and has sword to erase the Demon King’s lineage. His Black Sword can summon the many-headed guardian of Hell’s Gates, Cerberos Guitar.

Gustav

The tallest and most physically powerful of all the freshmen in the School of Magic. Despite being a gigantic bruiser, Gustav is much smarter than he lets on; he’s a constant source of gossipinformation on all the going-ons in Sforzando and the school itself. Claims to have a pure heart and soul, but is actually a huge pervert.

Count Ridge Tepes

Comes from a powerful family rumored to be aristocratic vampires and claims to be a descendant of Vlad Tepes. He’s powerful and arrogant and his magical power is top-class, but was unfortunate enough to be Gustav’s roommate.

Gothbell

A shaman from the ghost country of Dotar who uses skulls in his spells. Tenor’s mysterious roommate.

School Staff

Horn Pipe

Shchel and Great’s homeroom teacher. A legendary warrior of the Magicorps who survived the War of the North and both Wars of Sforzando. His reputation precedes him as an insanely strict teacher who puts his students through the wringer. He’s also the Kuu Crusaders’ coach, and makes it his mission in life to raise the next generation of humanity’s protectors. It’s possible he wouldn’t be teaching the freshmen if Board Chairman Clarinet hadn’t personally asked him to…

Head Teacher/Vice Director Debitto Percuss

Nephew of Queen Horn’s Buttler, Percuss, whom we met in the previous series. Clari’s confident and a trusted advisor, he’s unfortunately currently missing in action.

Board Chairman/Commander/Holy Regent Clarinet

Upgraded from High Priest, Clarinet is now not only the head of the Magicorps but also of the whole country in the Queen’s absence. He’s also got a say in the affairs of Sforzando’s School of Magic, which does make sense as it’s the training ground for the army he commands. He’s utterly loyal to the memory of Queen Horn, and calls the War of the North a Holy War.

Black Faeries/Remnants of Gloria

Baroque

A self-proclaimed envoy for the Great Fairy Goddess, he’s a sinister harlequin who’s using both humans and faeries for his own ends.

Nocturn

Baroque’s ally, he appears to be a scientist conducting morally questionable research on human beings.

Harmony

Shchel’s childhood friend, who he swore to meet again. He desperately wants to become a Great Mage before she turns 15 years old, but why? And why is she obeying the likes of Baroque and Nocturn?

The Great Heroes

Hamel, the Great Hero

Hero of the War of the North, player of the Super-Special-Sized violin; he spearheaded Humanity’s counterattack against the Northern Capital. He and his group defeated and sealed the Demon King after a long and bloody battle, and now, 20 years later, he spends his free time wasting money at the pachinko, sinking in debts and being a doting, but irresponsible father.

Flute, the Heartwarming Orphan

Known as a sort-of cute orphan girl who tagged along with the Hero Hamel in his adventures, she’s secretly the Queen of Sforzando. For whatever reason, she has kept her marriage a secret to the world, and is now living with her husband and children among peasants. Nowadays she’s a full-time housewife trying to raise her children and learn magic from books.

Raiel, Warrior of Love

Hamel’s kind-hearted childhood friend. During the previous adventure he made it his mission in life to support his old friend; now that the war is over, he’s rebuilt his hometown and is currently its mayor. He’s also married to Sizer, but has only managed to produce one kid so far. It probably has something to do with the explosive nosebleeds he’d have whenever he saw female skin.

Sizer, the Red Angel

Ex-Hawk King, and Queen of the Skies; an angel with a deadly scythe, the strongest and fastest among the heroes. During their adventure she killed lots of monsters really fast and was extremely unfeminine all around; after the war, she married Raiel, went to live in an elegant house and given elegant clothes, but is still the same tough-as-nails warrior as always.

Trom Bone, the Swordsman

The young, 11 years old prince of Dal Segno witnessed as his kingdom was razed to the ground by the demon armies; he swore revenge, and joined the Hero Hamel’s party in their fight against the Demon King. After the war was over, he returned to his country to organize the survivors and rebuild. Now Dal-Segno is back to its former glory, even though its King spends way too much time in the hospital for some reason.

Oboe the Crow

The Hawk King before Sizer, he was an honourable samurai in an army of cut-throats; his defection was but a question of time. Spent most of the previous adventure in the shape of a talkative crow whose constant stream of advices was ignored by all who heard him; after the war he just spends his days sleeping on a perch at Hamel’s home.

Others

Ocarina

Raiel and Sizer’s daughter, a girl with angelic wings. Has yet to be introduced.

The Mazoku

Great Demon King Chestra

The source of all evil, a complete monster whose long-term plan involved eating his own children for their powers, then the rest of humanity for seasoning. His children rebelled for obvious reasons.

Hell King Bass

Chestra’s most loyal minion, and leader of the Undead. After his body was destroyed, he reanimated and controlled the body of a young mage to carry him around and use magic in his stead.

Dragon King Drum

The strongest general in terms of brute strength, but the weakest in intelligence despite having two heads.

Beast King Guitar

The weakest among the generals in terms of battle strength. He was cunning and treacherous and treated everyone and everything as a possible opportunity to acquire more power; not even Chestra was free of his machinations, though he was amused by them. His true form is the many-headed guardian of Hell, Cerberus.
